L3Harris Technologies, Inc. (LHX Free Report) recently won a 10-year contract with the US Air Force for the modernization of the Boeing (BA) B-52 aircraft. As part of the deal, L3Harris will modernize and upgrade the B-52 aircraft with a proven electronic warfare system that can protect the crew from enemy radar threats.

Agreement details

Worth more than $ 947 million, the contract involves L3Harris to modernize the AN / ALQ-172 electronic warfare self-protection (EW) system deployed in B-52 jets with an improved integrated radio frequency system. This would allow military crews to simultaneously counter several electronic spectrum threats that interfere with air operations.

The contract allows L3Harris to extend its services to aircraft modernization, which includes software maintenance through to hardware upgrades.

Importance of AN / ALQ-172

Intense geopolitical tensions around the world have led countries to strengthen their defense systems. In this context, a good electronic warfare system plays an essential role in a defense system because it highlights the ability to use the electromagnetic spectrum effectively. Countries are increasing their spending on improved and effective electronic warfare systems to defend against radar threats and ensure better security in military services.

In this context, it is imperative to mention that the AN / ALQ-172 EW self-protection system from L3Harris can simultaneously counter multiple pulse, continuous wave, pulse Doppler and monopulse threats. It is integrated with the aircraft’s controls and displays and the defensive subsystem to ensure crew protection against the most sophisticated radar threats.

These enhanced features made L3Haris’ EW self-protection system an ideal choice for the US Air Force for its B-52 bombers. The last chord is proof of that.

Look ahead

According to the Frost & Sullivan report, the US Department of Defense (DoD) electronic warfare market is expected to reach $ 3.6 billion by 2025, indicating a 13.6% increase from 3, $ 17 billion in 2021.

This undoubtedly implies a significant influx of orders for GE manufacturers like L3Harris in the future. Other defense majors that would benefit from high demand for advanced communications systems are Lockheed Martin (LMT Free report), Northrop Grumman (CNO Free report) and Raytheon Technologies Corp (RTX Free report).

Lockheed Martin supplies AN / ALQ-210 for the US Navy and international MH-60R and AN / ALQ-217 on the US Navy’s E-2C / D aircraft, while Northrop Grumman supplies AN / APG- 83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) for the US Navy’s fleet of F-16 fighter jets that provide full spectrum radar warning, threat identification and advanced countermeasures capabilities. Meanwhile, Raytheon’s ALR-69A (V) and ALR-69A (V) provide a secure electronic shield against enemy radars.

Price movement

Over the past year, L3Harris shares have gained 33.2% compared to industry growth of 9.5%.
